Leisure

The picturesque town of Füssen, nestled in the Alps in Bavarian Swabia, is rich in art and culture and offers a wide range of recreation and leisure activities.

Füssen’s surroundings were shaped by the various ice ages, especially by the force of the Lech glacier. Numerous moraines and many of the alpine lakes are visible reminders of those times.

Findings from the end of the Palaeolithic period (14,000 to 9,000 BC) and plenty of material from the Mesolithic period indicate a temporary human presence. The area was slowly Romanized by the campaigns of Augustus’ stepsons. Emperor Claudius had a military road, the Via Claudia Augusta, built to connect the new area better to the Roman Empire. As a trade route, it significantly contributed to the economic rise of the town in the Middle Ages.

Nowadays, the Via Claudia Augusta is home to Füssen’s picturesque pedestrian area with its historic buildings and quiet alleys. But the second oldest town in the Allgäu offers even more reminders of its interesting past.
